The UK has historically had some of the finest infrastructure in the world. But with rising population and changing demographics, these networks are coming under increasing pressure. There is a growing requirement for maintenance and improvement of the country's transport and utility infrastructure.

Such work is delivered by CECA members. If the UK's infrastructure networks are going to keep pace with demand, it is essential that there is sustained investment across all sectors.

CECA has campaigned strongly over many years to make the case for such investment. This has included engagement with politicians at a national, regional and local level, as well as in devolved administrations.

In the run up to the 2010 General Election and subsequent Comprehensive Spending Review CECA worked with other industry bodies to provide a uniform voice from industry about the importance of infrastructure. This message has now been taken up by the Coalition government, who have identified infrastructure as one of the key areas for consideration when looking at how to return growth to the economy.

Current activities relating to sustainable workloads include:

  • Involvement in discussions over forthcoming rail sector periodic review, to press the case for continued investment in the UK rail network.
  • Supporting government efforts to establish policies that will encourage development of new power generation capacity in the UK.
  • Work to identify the future models of funding for infrastructure at a time when public sector funding is limited.
  • Liaison with regional and local bodies to understand new arrangements for the funding of future transport projects.
