We were very sorry to learn of the passing of Alan Muddiman MBE a few weeks ago.
Alan made a long-standing contribution to the construction industry through his leadership on health, safety and occupational health, particularly in civil engineering. He was awarded an MBE in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours, in recognition of both his work for the Association and his wider impact on health and safety in the construction industry.
Within CECA, he served as Chair of the CECA Health & Safety Forum / Committee and helped shape practical industry guidance, including CECA’s work on CDM 2015 and occupational health management. His contribution seems to have been especially focused on turning health and safety requirements into clear, usable guidance for contractors.
Through CONIAC (the Construction Industry Advisory Committee), he also contributed to wider industry guidance and discussion, including CDM-related guidance and practical proposals on how best to present streamlined construction safety guidance to the industry.
In summary, Alan Muddiman’s legacy was as a respected industry voice who helped improve construction health, safety and occupational health practice, both through CECA and through cross-industry work with CONIAC.
