As part of CECA’s 30th anniversary celebrations, our ‘30 Projects for 30 Years’ campaign is showcasing the outstanding infrastructure projects delivered by CECA members across the UK. Each case study highlights the technical expertise, innovation and lasting economic, environmental and social value that the civil engineering sector has contributed over the past three decades.
Our latest featured project is the Eastern Green scheme on the A45 in Coventry, delivered by Breheny Civil Engineering for Coventry City Council. This is a major highway improvement scheme on the A45 at Eastern Green, supporting new housing and commercial development in one of Coventry’s fastest-growing areas.
Completed for Coventry City Council in April 2024, the approximately £15 million project created a new grade-separated junction and included 2.6 kilometres of new highway, seven kilometres of drainage, a new bridge, three contractor-designed culvert crossings and an extensive earthworks programme.
Early contractor involvement and Breheny’s in-house design expertise enabled the project team to identify risks and develop practical, cost-effective solutions. A major water main diversion was avoided, while an efficient earthworks strategy generated savings of more than £1 million without compromising the quality or performance of the completed infrastructure.
Approximately 250,000 cubic metres of material was sourced from within the site, reducing the need to import construction materials. Around 270,000 tonnes of site-won material was recycled and reused, avoiding more than 5,500 lorry movements and reducing carbon emissions, congestion and disruption to surrounding communities.
Drone surveys were also used to monitor progress, improve the accuracy of earthworks operations and support safer working practices. The project created employment and apprenticeship opportunities while delivering the highway capacity and connectivity required to support new homes, jobs and economic growth.
Eastern Green demonstrates the contribution CECA members make to the UK’s infrastructure by combining technical excellence, early risk management and sustainable construction to deliver lasting economic, environmental and social benefits.
