Barhale’s Victoria Embankment Combined Sewer Overflows project is the latest scheme to feature in CECA’s ‘30 Projects for 30 Years’ campaign, celebrating the infrastructure achievements delivered by CECA members since 1996.
Delivered as part of the Thames Tideway Tunnel programme, the £26 million project demonstrates the exceptional engineering required to undertake major infrastructure work in the heart of London.
The scheme involved tunnelling, piling and the construction of reinforced-concrete structures, including a 45-metre-deep shaft, within a highly constrained site beside a major road and above London Underground lines.
Completed in January 2024, the project will help prevent sewage overflows from entering the River Thames by transferring flows into the new Tideway Tunnel. Barhale also worked to reduce the scheme’s environmental impact through the use of lower-carbon concrete, while the completed project will provide new public space along the riverside.
