The transformation of the former Blindwells opencast mine near Tranent is the latest project featured in CECA’s ‘30 Projects for 30 Years’ campaign, celebrating the contribution of civil engineering as part of our 30th anniversary.
Working for Hargreaves Services plc, I & H Brown has helped bring a major brownfield site back into productive use through an extensive programme of reclamation, ground improvement and earthworks. The project demonstrates how engineering expertise and sustained collaboration can overcome difficult ground conditions and create opportunities for new housing and communities.
The 128-hectare site had previously been considered undevelopable for housing, with uncompacted colliery spoil reaching depths of 65 metres. Working with the client’s designers, I & H Brown developed a financially viable approach using large surcharging mounds and high-energy impact compaction to improve the ground and support redevelopment.
Approximately 12 million cubic metres of bulk earthworks have been undertaken to date, with successful remediation helping make provision for around 3,500 new homes possible. The company’s wider involvement has included roads, drainage, footpaths, landscaping and enabling works for housing, a school and a town centre.
As development has progressed and residents have moved in, further phases of earthworks have required careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption. Blindwells highlights the lasting contribution of civil engineering to regeneration, turning a challenging industrial legacy into the foundations of a growing community.
