As part of CECA’s 30th anniversary celebrations, we’re shining a spotlight on the projects that have shaped UK infrastructure.
Next up: Cairn Cross Civil Engineering‘s transformation of Northern Rail’s maintenance depot at Hull Botanic Gardens.
Acting as Principal Contractor, Cairn Cross delivered a major extension and upgrade to the depot, including a new steel-framed canopy, CET and fuelling infrastructure, AdBlue systems, drainage, electrical and CCTV works, fume extraction and more, to enable servicing of Northern’s Class 170 and Class 155 fleets.
The standout achievement? The entire scheme was delivered within a live, fully operational rail depot, with 100% operational continuity maintained throughout, zero incidents recorded, and the project completed on time and within budget.
The result is a modern, future-ready maintenance hub supporting improved fleet availability and service reliability for years to come.
A brilliant example of the technical skill and careful planning that CECA members bring to complex, live-environment infrastructure delivery.
