Our ‘30 Projects for 30 Years’ series celebrates the infrastructure delivered by CECA members over the past three decades. This profile features VolkerLaser, part of VolkerWessels UK, and its refurbishment of the Tay Road Bridge for the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board.
Completed in 2025, the approximately £10 million project helped secure the long-term resilience of a vital transport connection between Fife and Dundee. The works included extensive concrete repairs, waterproofing and resurfacing, alongside the installation of 92 new expansion joints.
With around 29,000 people using the bridge every day, maintaining traffic and minimising disruption were central to delivery. A phased programme and contraflow systems kept journeys moving, while innovative access solutions enabled complex repairs to the bridge’s piers and columns, including within the tidal zone.
Alongside the engineering works, the team supported educational engagement, a student placement and charitable activities within the local community. The project demonstrates how CECA members combine specialist expertise, careful planning and community engagement to extend the life of essential infrastructure.
