As part of CECA’s 30th anniversary celebrations, our ‘30 Under 30’ series showcases the talented young professionals who will shape the future of the UK’s civil engineering industry.
This month, we profile Luke Courtnell, an award-winning Site Manager with McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd who has made rapid progress since joining the industry as an apprentice straight from school.
Luke progressed to Assistant Site Manager in under two years and has since advanced to his current role, overseeing the day-to-day delivery of complex civil engineering and infrastructure schemes across the Midlands. His responsibilities include managing site teams and ensuring that work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
He is currently working in Nantwich on the completion of the A51 bypass at Reaseheath. The works include carriageway and footpath construction, drainage, traffic signage, a toucan crossing and final surfacing.
Luke’s previous experience includes delivering a multi-million-pound retirement community in Newport, Shropshire, and working on Birmingham City Council’s A457 Dudley Road improvement scheme. His achievements were recognised in 2025 when he was named Apprentice of the Year at the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards.
Alongside his practical experience, Luke holds a CITB-accredited Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate, EUSR CAT 1 and 2 and EUSR Water qualifications, as well as a First Aid at Work qualification. He is also studying towards a Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management.
Luke takes particular pride in contributing to projects that make a positive and lasting difference. He enjoys the problem-solving and creativity involved in civil engineering and values the opportunity to learn from the wide range of people he encounters through his work.
Despite his own rapid progression, Luke has also found time to support others. He mentors younger apprentices at McPhillips, sharing his experience and helping to strengthen the future talent pipeline on which the industry depends.
Looking ahead, Luke hopes to take on responsibility for a wider range of projects and continue developing his technical knowledge, leadership skills and confidence. His ambition is to progress to Contracts Manager, while his directors believe he has the potential to advance even further in the business.
Luke’s determination, practical ability and commitment to supporting the next generation make him an excellent representative of the talented young people building their careers in civil engineering today.
