CECA Backs NIC’s Recommendations On Infrastructure Planning

CECA has added its weight to industry support for the National Infrastructure Commission’s recommendations on the UK’s infrastructure planning system.

Commenting on the NIC’s report, CECA Chief Executive Alasdair Reisner said: “Historically, the UK has suffered from a lack of long-term strategy in infrastructure planning, with nationally-significant projects falling victim to drift and delay.

“The National Infrastructure Commission’s recommendations are all aimed at streamlining the planning system to deliver maximum benefit of investment and to enable industry to become more agile in meeting the challenge of climate change.

“The Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project planning regime was established fifteen years ago to provide more certainty on the delivery of key infrastructure and to streamline project delivery.

“But since the 2008 Planning Act not only has the need to continually update policy in the face of the climate emergency become ever clearer, but there has been a loss of momentum in getting spades in the ground on the projects UK businesses and communities need to thrive.

“If we are to rise to the challenge of building an economy that delivers both on net zero and sustainable economic growth, these recommendations must be supported and implemented not only by industry, but by governments and political parties in all parts of the UK.”
