CECA: Gatwick Second Runway Will Mean Lift-Off For Growth

Civils contractors today said that the UK Government’s decision to give the green light to Gatwick’s second runway will boost Britain’s connectivity, competitiveness, and economic growth.

The £2.2 billion project will unlock additional capacity that will support up to 100,000 more flights a year and create an expected 14,000 new jobs. The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) said that the decision represents a significant vote of confidence in the UK’s infrastructure sector and its supply chain, and represents a major opportunity for its members to deliver, based on efficient procurement and robust environmental and community commitments.

Commenting, CECA Director of Policy and Public Affairs Ben Goodwin said: “CECA has long campaigned on the basis that the UK requires increased airport capacity. This decision is a welcome vote of confidence in the civils industry to deliver on the Government’s vision for a high-growth economy.

“Gatwick’s second runway, which will be almost entirely privately financed and will depend on efficient procurement and delivery, will boost growth, create jobs, and increase opportunities for businesses and communities for years to come.

“At the same time, it must be delivered based on robust mitigation: noise impacts must be properly managed, sustainable transport links must be strengthened, and the project must be aligned with environmental safeguards and carbon reduction measures.

“CECA members stand ready to play their part in building this critical infrastructure responsibly, sustainably, and to world-class standards.

“We look forward to working with Gatwick, our members, and industry partners, to streamline early engagement and to ensure that local communities are best placed to take advantage of the training and employment opportunities this scheme will create.”
