As part of CECA’s 30th anniversary celebrations, our 30 Projects for 30 Years campaign is highlighting some of the outstanding infrastructure schemes delivered by CECA members over the past three decades.
Delivered by CECA North West member A E Yates Ltd. for National Highways, the £16 million A595 Moresby Hall Improvement Scheme safeguarded one of West Cumbria’s most important transport links. The project reconstructed a century-old embankment at risk of collapse on a strategically important route serving Sellafield, local communities and the wider regional economy.
Working with 11 organisations and more than 50 local supply chain partners, A E Yates combined careful planning with innovative engineering to minimise disruption. The scheme included off-line micro-tunnelling, 10 intensive weekend closures and one of the UK’s largest uses of Geoweb and lightweight expanded clay aggregate in an embankment.
Sustainability and social value were also central to delivery. Around 22,000 tonnes of recycled material were reused on site, project initiatives generated estimated carbon savings of 400 tCO2e, 2,000 trees were planted and £3.4 million of social value was created through apprenticeships, local employment, supply chain opportunities and community engagement.
Completed on time and under budget in January 2024, the scheme went on to win the Environmental Excellence Awardat the CECA North West Awards 2024 and was Highly Commended in both the Collaborative Partnership and Project of the Year (over £5 million) categories.
The A595 Moresby Hall Improvement Scheme is a strong example of the innovation, collaboration and technical expertise CECA members bring to delivering resilient infrastructure and creating lasting benefits for the communities it serves.
