Contractors Welcome Call For Regulatory Reform To Unlock UK’s Nuclear Potential

Civils contractors today welcomed the publication of the Nuclear Taskforce’s interim report, describing it as a benchmark moment in unlocking the potential of new nuclear power in the UK.

The Taskforce’s report calls for ‘once-in-a-generation’ regulatory reform to remove unnecessary complexity, cut costs, and speed up delivery of nuclear power infrastructure.

Commenting, CECA spokesperson Stuart Miller, Director of CECA North East, said:“Regulatory reform is essential if the UK is to delivery clean energy and major nuclear projects on time and at scale.

“Today’s taskforce report shines a spotlight on the needless complexity and delays that stall critical infrastructure in this country.

“CECA has long argued that the UK requires a mixed portfolio of electricity generation capabilities which must rest on the reliability of nuclear power.

“Proportional, streamlined regulation in this sector will help unlock innovation, boost investment, and create skilled jobs across the UK – all based on world-class safety standards.

“We believe Government, regulators, and industry must work together to bring greater efficiency and consistency to planning and approvals.

“CECA members stand ready to realise the UK’s ambition for a zero-carbon future, which must be built on the basis of a thriving nuclear sector.

“We look forward to working with government, our members, and other stakeholders to support the Taskforce’s work as it develops its final recommendations, which are due to be published in the autumn.

“By getting this right – and by facilitating the delivery of Sizewell C, small modular reactors, and other nuclear projects – the sector will not only create high-paying, highly skilled jobs across the country, but will support prosperity for businesses and communities for many years to come.”
