Building a Stronger Future for Civil Engineering in the North East

By Stuart Miller, director, Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) North East

As director of CECA North East, I lead an organisation that unites the region’s civil engineering contractors, from large national firms to smaller regional businesses. Together, we are at the forefront of delivering vital infrastructure projects that drive economic growth, enhance connectivity and improve quality of life across the North East.

Our work is guided by five key pillars: Sustainability, Climate Change & Social Value; Careers & Recruitment; Skills & Training; Clients, Policy & Workload and Health, Safety & Wellbeing. These pillars shape our initiatives, ensuring we best support our members by addressing the challenges ahead and helping them seize opportunities.

Recent investments underscore the region’s commitment to infrastructure development. According to the Financial Times and informed sources, the UK government has selected the Teesworks site in Teesside for its second AI Growth Zone, with plans to establish Europe’s largest data centre, spanning nearly 500,000 square metres. This project aims to position the North East as a hub for AI and tech sectors, attracting major tech firms and driving innovation.

In transport, North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has announced a £208 million investment in the region’s transport network, the first phase of an £800 million plan to be delivered in the coming years. This includes the construction of a new ferry landing in North Shields, the roll-out of smart ticketing on Metro and local rail and the development of 100km of walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure.

These investments are not just about building infrastructure. They are about creating a sustainable and inclusive future for our communities. They align with our mission to foster collaboration, innovation and growth within the civil engineering sector.

Leadership transitions within CECA North East reflect our commitment to this vision. Dan Hutton, group commercial director at MGL Group, has stepped into the role of chair, bringing fresh energy and insight. Dan’s extensive experience and commitment to collaboration make him ideally suited to guide us through the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Meanwhile, former chair, Ross Markwell, director of business development at Esh Group, who remains on the board, has taken on a national position within CECA, reflecting the strength of talent we have in our region and the increasing influence we wield at a broader level.

As we look ahead, continued government investment combined with a strong, united industry, will enable us to meet the region’s infrastructure needs while driving social value and sustainability. CECA North East is dedicated to making the civil engineering sector stronger, more inclusive and better equipped for the future — for our members, our clients and our communities.

Together, we are building more than just infrastructure. We are building a future that benefits everyone.
