We were fortunate enough to have a brilliant visit to the Humber Bridge on Tuesday with members of the CECA Yorkshire & the Humber Foundations Group.

The trip was kindly arranged by our new Chair, Daniel Roche, and was a great opportunity for our Foundations members — along with myself, Jennifer Patel, our Past Chair Eleanor Westwood — to learn more about one of the region’s most iconic pieces of infrastructure.

We had a fascinating presentation on the history of the bridge, the engineering behind it, and the huge impact it has had — not just on transport links and access across the Humber, but also in terms of wider social value, sustainability and regional connectivity.We were then lucky enough to be taken inside the bridge itself, including a tour and a visit into the road deck — a real behind-the-scenes look at the scale, complexity and ongoing management of such an important asset.

A huge thank you to everyone at Humber Bridge who looked after us so well, to Daniel for arranging the visit, and to the Foundations Group for getting involved and making the most of the opportunity. Thanks to Raphael Silva, Andrew East & Tom Ede for the excellent presentation outlining current and future projects, and the guided tour of the bridge’s deck box sections.This was a great reminder of the impact civil engineering has on people, places and communities — and why it’s so important to inspire the next generation of the industry.

The Foundations Group is a group of young professionals starting their careers in the civil engineering industry. They support our regional careers and schools outreach activities, help to develop materials to attract new entrants, and are invited to see different aspects of the industry via site visits and member meetings.
