Whenever we host CECA Wales’ annual golf day there’s always an element of uncertainty regarding the weather! However, there was nothing uncertain about the weather for the first official week of Summer – it was horrific! Driving down the M4 to set our stall out at the Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club and to welcome members and guests was disheartening to say the least with windscreen wipers at triple speed, the wind battering the car and visibility down to about 20 metres.
But the weather gods have a knack of taking pity on us and by midday, as the first team from Knights Brown set out from the first tee the sun was shining brightly, the links course had drained the water so well you’d think you were in Spain and only a strong breeze reminded us of the early morning conditions. Perfect!
We had 10 teams competing from Walters, Griffiths, ERH, Centregreat, Knights Brown, Cymru Quarries, Scotts and RMS. Slightly less than in previous years but that’s down to some “low key” promotion on my part. That will change next year so if you couldn’t make it this year we’ll be in touch much sooner for 2027 and maybe some sponsorship opportunities too. Nevertheless, it felt quite “intimate”!
It was a tough course as everyone who came off the 18th reminded me – and so the scores were on the lower side.
Nearest the pin went to James Tuck of Knights Brown and the longest drive to Callum Duncan of Andrew Scott Ltd. Our best guest prize went to Chris Grey of Llanmoor Homes with the best score of the day at 33. The best top two combined team score went to Centregreat with 79. But the John Morgan Cup (which was first won in 1953!) went to Rhys Jolly of ERH Communications, by the finest of margins, with a score of 30.
Our charity for the event was the Jac Lewis Foundation, an incredibly worthwhile and important Welsh charity, and we will be making our donation shortly.
I know golf isn’t for everyone but it’s still an important part of our calendar at CECA Wales and is a great way for members and guests to get together informally and relax (well, kind of!). Details for next year’s event will be out much sooner for 2027 so I hope that a few who missed this year’s event will be able to join us. Watch this space for details of the when and where.
