A webinar introduced by CECA Wales and CARES UK and delivered by Simon Griffiths, Advisor to CARES UK
This hour long morning webinar on 25th November 2026 between 930-1030am will be jointly presented by Ed Evans of CECA Wales and Simon Griffiths, Advisor to CARES UK, the UK Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels. Attendance is free for CECA Wales members and the County Surveyors Society (CSS) Cymru.
Why should you join us?
Twenty six UK policy and regulatory instruments now ask the same question of reinforcing steel: where did it come from, and can you prove it? Twenty one already apply. The duties sit with clients but are discharged through Tier 1 contractors and their supply chain, but the evidence is often lost at the “cut and bend” stage, long before the concrete is poured. Addressing this shortfall needs no new technology. It simply needs requirements to be written into specifications, tender questions, contract clauses and KPIs and managed through the “cut and bend” stage.
This session will allow local authority clients and CECA Wales members to better understand the policy and regulatory instruments and their roles in ensuring compliance from the rolling mill to construction.
Why does this matter for construction clients? Clients hold the duties of compliance. They must collect and publish steel tonnage and origin under WPPN 008 and PPN 022. Clear specifications, tender questions, contract clauses and KPIs are essential.
Why does this matter for contractors? Contractors are responsible, through their contracts, for discharging the duties of the client at three of the four handover stages within their own contracts. Traceability at the “cut, bend and deliver” stage is where cast identity is often lost and is the only point where it cannot be recovered. This has to be addressed to ensure compliance.
